Introduction
This is a leisurely half-day land excursion that focuses on the natural history of Moorea and what we know about it through the lenses of traditional Polynesian knowledge and modern science.
Description
Polynesian people settled in French
Polynesia almost 2000 years ago and over the centuries have developed a
rich knowledge of the natural world of their islands. This knowledge
has been passed down through the generations, and much of it still
exists today in the minds of elders living in villages scattered around
the archipelagos.
In modern times scientists have often used
islands as natural laboratories for studying a variety of phenomena.
They can be considered model systems for studying problems that can be
applied to the world at large. Understanding the complex interactions
between humans and their physical and biological surroundings has
become a priority in scientific research, and islands are the best
place to do this.
On this visit to Moorea you will be introduced to the natural history of this beautiful island, and learn about traditional and modern scientific knowledge of the geology, plants, terrestrial and marine animals. We will also visit UC Berkeley's Richard Gump South Pacific Research Station to talk about research being done here, and see the Atitia Center where traditional Polynesian knowledge and modern science is fused into educational programs for the students and community.
Your tour will be in an air-conditioned bus with stops along the way for pictures and short discussions. Besides visiting the two beautiful bays we will drive up into the interior of Moorea for spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. There will be plenty of time along the way to ask questions and discuss any issues or topics that have grabbed your interest during your stay in French Polynesia.
